Norwegian Character and Diversity
The decorations will demonstrate a commitment to investing in art and decorations on a scale and quality that reflect the airport's national significance. The aim is to showcase to a large and international audience the diversity of Norwegian art. The distinct Norwegian character should emerge as a reflection of the location's landscape and architecture.
The main goal for the artistic decoration at Oslo Airport is:
"to bring works into the airport's buildings and outdoor spaces as independent expressions with high artistic quality and intrinsic value; linked to place, time, and function".
The Artists
The selection of artists has been made through open and closed competitions led by a decoration committee.
The following artists have contributed to the decoration:
- Kåre Groven's well-known sculpture "Draft" has been moved from Fornebu and greets departing travelers outside the terminal.
- Per Inge Bjørlo has created the sculpture series "Alexis," consisting of six sculptures in stainless steel. They are located in the departure hall, arrival hall, and at the train station. Bjørlo has, among other things, been Norway's representative at the biennales in Venice and Sao Paulo, has been acquired by most public collections, and has had several public decoration assignments.
Anna Karin Rynander has delivered "Human in Motion" – eleven sound showers and two marathon dancers. In the sound showers, travelers receive different soundscapes and moods on their journey when they stand within a marked circle under the "shower." The sound showers are located in the departure hall and the arrival hall. The two marathon dancers meet the travelers at baggage claim. The piece consists of two light panels. Anna Karin Rynander is a young artist who has particularly made her mark by using computer and video technology in an exciting and original artistic expression.
Sidsel Westbø has decorated the glass walls on the six footbridges in the piers. Through the abstraction of various landscape motifs and with a sure hand in drawing, use of color, and composition, the building's bright and open character is reflected. Sissel Westbø is a highly experienced and recognized artist. Through her work as a graphic artist, she has particularly worked with small formats. She is represented in important collections and museums, including the National Gallery and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Jan Groth has created the wall hanging for the quiet room located in the domestic pier. Through his black and white works in tapestry technique, Groth has created a distinctive expression of silence and poetry.Jan Groth's works have been acquired by several renowned museums and collections, including the Metropolitan Museum (NYC), Guggenheim, Tate Gallery, the Gobelin Museum in Paris, and the National Gallery.
Kai Gjelseth (graphic designer) has selected and designed 26 quotes that are embedded in the floors of the piers and the departure hall. The quotes are partly Norwegian proverbs, partly taken from Håvamål, and partly taken from Norwegian poets. They are presented in 16 different languages.
Elisabeth von Krogh has provided still lifes of ceramic jars. The jars were placed at the departure level at the train station but are now dismantled due to the terminal's expansion and the construction of the new train station towards 2017. Elisabeth von Krogh is a recognized ceramist with extensive exhibition activity and experience in several decoration assignments. She has been acquired by the museums of decorative arts in Bergen, Oslo, and Trondheim, among others.
Geir Stormoen has created two natural stone works that are embedded in the wall at the entrance to the terminal from the parking garage. The expression is based on different geometric lines while forming an organic contrast to the concrete material that surrounds them. The concrete relief was originally created following a closed competition at Oslo Airport Fornebu but was later moved to Gardermoen.
Carin Wessel has created two textile constructions called "Ad Astra." One lies as a luminous cloud under the ceiling centrally in the departure hall, while the other extends like a nerve from the floor of the arrival hall to the ceiling of the departure hall next to the train station. Wessel is an experienced textile artist with many significant decoration assignments, including the government quarter.
The two artists Helga Bru and Kristin Ytreberg have created the artwork "Palindrome," which is a visual and mental play where travelers can continually discover new images and "palindromic" phrases. (A palindrome is a combination of numbers or letters that expresses the same thing when read forwards and backwards). The material is lacquered metal and the artwork is displayed in Pier South (towards exit B).
Floor boxes is a project consisting of 32 artworks created by nine different artists. The works are placed in glass boxes (30 x 30 cm) embedded in the floor at the railway station and by the baggage carousels.
The artists are:
Karin Margaretha Valum with "Bomsterkraft"
Per Jonas Lindström with "Blandet drops"
Kristin Wexelsen Goksøyr with "Under jorden"
Dag Skedsmo with "2 Plan"
Karen Klim with "Meteor"
Sofie Persvik with "Troll i eske"
In connection with the expansion of the terminal building and the front plaza in 2017, Avinor has entered into agreements with galleries for the loan of art at the airport.
Artists and works introduced from 2017
Munchmuseet has an agreement with Avinor to exhibit two works in the terminal at Oslo Airport. The exhibited works are replaced at least once a year.
The display case is located in the newest pier that goes north from the middle of the terminal building, near the D-gates (international).
Eva Rothschild has created a sculpture in lacquered aluminum, consisting of 7 triangles of various sizes assembled together. The work is titled “Gladiator” and is located at the far end of the domestic section in the newest pier.
Anne Katrine Dolven has created the marble sculpture “Seng” which is placed just after the passport control at the departure level in the non-Schengen area. The marble is extracted from a quarry in Fauske.
